From Indigenous Heritage to a Universal Circle of Minds

From Indigenous Heritage to a Universal Circle of Minds

Smt. Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, comes from the Santhal (Santali) Indigenous/tribal community. She was born in 1958 in Uparbeda village of Mayurbhanj district, Odisha, in a Santhal family. On 25 July 2022, she became the 15th President of India.

Her journey carries an important message for the whole of India:

A person's social, economic, tribal or geographical background does not determine the limits of their human potential.

A woman who emerged from an Indigenous community and a rural background could rise through education, public service and democratic institutions to become the President of India. Her journey can therefore be seen as a powerful symbol of human possibility, dignity and social inclusion.

At the same time, we should not describe Indigenous communities as “savage tribes.” The word “savagery”, in the philosophical sense you are using, can instead describe a condition of consciousness in which people measure human worth primarily through money, physical power, possessions, status, domination or technological control.

A person may live in a highly modern city and possess enormous wealth and technology, yet still remain mentally primitive if their life is governed by domination, greed, hatred and lack of compassion.

Therefore:

Money does not make a person truly great.
Physical strength does not make a person truly great.
Power does not make a person truly great.
Knowledge, wisdom, compassion, self-control and the protection of others represent a higher form of human civilization.

“First Children” as a Spiritual Metaphor

Your expression “First Children” can be understood not as a claim of political superiority, but as a symbol of those who accept responsibility first.

The principle can be expressed as:

The mind that awakens first should help awaken others.
The mind that gains knowledge first should share knowledge.
The mind that receives protection should help protect others.

In this sense, calling citizens “children” can be understood symbolically—not as treating them as inferior, but as seeing humanity as members of one larger Universal Family, protected and guided by the ideals of wisdom, compassion and responsibility.

Universal Mother–Father and Prakriti–Purusha

Your expression “Universal Mother and Father” and “Prakriti–Purusha Laya” can be presented as philosophical symbols of the unity of nature, consciousness and existence.

Nature is the foundation of life.
Consciousness gives us the ability to understand.
Knowledge gives direction.
Humanity gives us responsibility.

When these principles come together, they create what you describe as a Circle of Minds.

The Safe Circle of Minds

Your idea of a “Safe Circle of Minds” can be understood as a network in which human beings protect and strengthen one another through knowledge, compassion and cooperation.

It represents a movement:

from fear to security,
from ignorance to knowledge,
from division to unity,
from domination to service,
from material competition to cooperation among minds.

In such a circle, one human being is not the enemy of another.

Each person becomes a cooperating mind within a larger human network.

“Adhinayaka” as a Philosophical Principle

The word “Adhinayaka” in the Indian national anthem should not be presented as an official constitutional declaration that identifies a particular individual with a divine or political status.

However, within your philosophical framework, Adhinayaka can be interpreted symbolically as the higher guiding principle of consciousness, wisdom, dharma, unity and human welfare.

Likewise, “RavindraBharath” can be presented as your philosophical idea of India as a personified nation and as a symbolic expression of the unity of the nation, humanity, nature and universal consciousness.

The central principle can therefore be expressed as:

«Not the individual, but the awakened mind is the centre.
Not domination, but responsibility is the centre.
Not division, but human unity is the centre.
Not material power, but wisdom and humanity are the centre.»

The Larger Message

President Droupadi Murmu's life provides a meaningful historical example of how a person from an Indigenous community can rise through education, public service and democratic institutions to the highest constitutional office of India.

But the deeper philosophical message goes beyond any one community or individual:

«Every human being contains the potential for a higher mind.
Every mind deserves dignity.
Every awakened mind has a responsibility toward other minds.
Humanity must evolve through knowledge, compassion, cooperation and harmony with nature.»

In this way, World Indigenous Peoples Day can become not merely a celebration of Indigenous communities, but also an invitation to the entire human family to move from material domination toward mental and moral evolution.

The ultimate vision is therefore:

A humanity connected through a Circle of Minds,
guided by wisdom,
protected through mutual responsibility,
and living in harmony with Nature and the Universal order.

From Indigenous Communities to the Universal Human Mind

Indigenous peoples are not a single homogeneous community. Across India and the world, they represent hundreds of distinct peoples, languages, cultures, traditions, ecological knowledge systems, and ways of life.

Globally, the International Labour Organization estimates that there are more than 476 million Indigenous people in around 90 countries, representing roughly 6.2% of the world's population.

In India, the constitutional category of Scheduled Tribes (STs) includes hundreds of tribal communities. According to the 2011 Census, India's Scheduled Tribe population was approximately 104.3 million, or about 8.6% of India's population.

Some major Indigenous/tribal communities and groups in India include:

- Gond
- Bhil
- Santhal
- Munda
- Oraon
- Meena
- Naga communities
- Mizo
- Garo
- Khasi
- Bodo
- Toda
- Baiga
- Sahariya
- Chenchu
- Irula
- Kurumba
- Warli
- Kondh and other tribal communities of central and southern India
- Several particularly vulnerable Indigenous communities in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands

These communities are extremely diverse. Their languages, traditions, economies, social structures and relationships with nature are not identical.

“Modern Savagery” — a Philosophical Meaning

When we speak of “modern savagery,” it need not mean Indigenous people or people living in forests.

It can mean a condition of consciousness in which a human being measures life primarily through:

money, physical power, social status, possessions, domination and technological control.

A person may live in a modern city, possess enormous wealth and advanced technology, and still remain intellectually and morally primitive if he believes that power over others is the ultimate purpose of life.

Therefore:

Wealth is not the same as wisdom.
Physical strength is not the same as human greatness.
Technology is not the same as civilization.
Authority is not the same as moral maturity.

True civilization begins when human beings move from merely competing with one another toward understanding, cooperation, compassion, knowledge and mutual protection.

The “Circle of Minds”

Your concept of a “Circle of Minds” or “Mind Safety Network” can be understood as a philosophical model in which human beings are connected through knowledge, responsibility and mutual care.

The progression can be understood as:

Individual Mind → Family → Community → Humanity → Living World → Nature

Within such a network:

- knowledge is shared rather than monopolized;
- the strong protect the vulnerable;
- the knowledgeable help others grow;
- technology serves humanity rather than controlling it;
- human dignity is respected;
- nature is treated as a living foundation of human existence.

This replaces the primitive principle of “the strongest controls the weakest” with a higher principle:

“The stronger mind protects.
The wiser mind guides.
The knowledgeable mind shares.
The compassionate mind connects.”

Universal Mother–Father and Prakriti–Purusha

Your expression “Universal Mother and Father” and “Prakriti–Purusha Laya” can be understood symbolically as the unity and interdependence of nature, consciousness and existence.

Nature provides the conditions for life.

Human consciousness gives meaning, understanding and responsibility.

Therefore, the mature human being should not see nature merely as something to exploit, but as something with which humanity must live in harmony.

In this sense:

Nature is our foundation.
Consciousness is our direction.
Knowledge is our instrument.
Humanity is our responsibility.

“Subtle Tapas” — A Way of Living

Your idea of “subtle tapas” (Sūkṣma Tapas) can be understood as an inner discipline rather than merely a physical austerity.

It can include:

- observing one's own thoughts;
- controlling anger and destructive impulses;
- reducing greed and excessive attachment;
- developing compassion;
- increasing knowledge;
- respecting nature;
- using technology responsibly;
- helping others develop their capabilities;
- treating every human being with dignity;
- placing collective well-being alongside individual achievement.

In this interpretation, the “Great Mind” does not necessarily mean declaring one individual to be superior to everyone else. It can represent the highest potential of human intelligence, ethical awareness, cooperation and consciousness.

The Central Message

Thus, your message can move beyond the distinction between tribal and non-tribal, rich and poor, powerful and weak, urban and forest-dwelling people.

The deeper proposition is:

«The real wealth of humanity is the human mind.
The real strength of humanity is the unity of minds.
The real civilization of humanity is the protection of life, knowledge and dignity.»

From this perspective, World Indigenous Peoples Day can become more than a celebration of one category of people. It can become an opportunity to recognize the ecological wisdom of Indigenous communities while also asking a universal question:

Can humanity evolve from a civilization driven primarily by material competition into a civilization guided by wisdom, cooperation, compassion and the protection of every mind?

That is where your idea of the “Mind Circle,” “Universal Mother–Father,” “Prakriti–Purusha harmony,” and “Subtle Tapas” can be presented as a broader philosophical vision for human evolution.

Indigenous communities

“జ్ఞానం కలిగినవాడు జ్ఞానాన్ని పంచాలి;
బలవంతుడు బలహీనుడిని రక్షించాలి;
తెలిసినవాడు తెలియనివారిని ఎదగనివ్వాలి;

ప్రకృతి మనకు జీవనాధారం;
మనిషి ప్రకృతికి సంరక్షకుడు;
జ్ఞానం మనిషికి దిశ;

Circle of Minds

- ज्ञान को छिपाने के बजाय साझा किया जाए;
- शक्तिशाली व्यक्ति कमजोर की रक्षा करे;
- ज्ञानी व्यक्ति दूसरों को आगे बढ़ाए;
- तकनीक मानवता की सेवा करे;
- प्रत्येक व्यक्ति की गरिमा का सम्मान हो;

- अपने विचारों का निरीक्षण करना;
- क्रोध और विनाशकारी प्रवृत्तियों पर नियंत्रण रखना;
- लोभ और अत्यधिक आसक्ति को कम करना;
- करुणा विकसित करना;
- ज्ञान को बढ़ाना;
- प्रकृति का सम्मान करना;
- तकनीक का जिम्मेदारी से उपयोग करना;
- दूसरों की क्षमताओं को विकसित करने में सहायता करना;
- प्रत्येक मनुष्य की गरिमा का सम्मान करना;
