The inauguration of IIT Delhi's Abu Dhabi campus by Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan marks a significant step in the international expansion of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). This is the second overseas IIT campus, following the IIT Madras campus in Tanzania, which began operations in 2023. There are also plans for a third campus in Sri Lanka, continuing the expansion strategy that began in 2022.

This initiative reflects the historical tradition of Indian education, reminiscent of ancient universities like Nalanda, which attracted students from across the globe and saw Indian scholars teaching internationally. This modern expansion aims to enhance global educational outreach, promote Indian technological expertise, and foster international collaboration in higher education.
