The Andromeda Galaxy and the Milky Way

The Andromeda Galaxy is slowly moving toward the Milky Way at a speed of about 110 kilometers per second. While that may sound incredibly fast, the two galaxies are currently separated by around 2.5 million light-years, so their first close encounter is not expected for roughly 4 billion years.

When they finally meet, it won't be a dramatic head-on crash like in movies. Because the distances between individual stars are so enormous, most stars—including our Sun—are expected to pass by one another without directly colliding. Instead, gravity will gradually pull, stretch, and reshape both galaxies over hundreds of millions of years.

As the merger continues, giant clouds of gas and dust will collide, triggering spectacular bursts of new star formation. Some stars may be flung into intergalactic space, while the supermassive black holes at the centers of both galaxies are expected to eventually merge into an even larger black hole.

In the end, the Milky Way and Andromeda will become a single massive galaxy, commonly nicknamed Milkomeda. If Earth still exists by then, the night sky would be completely transformed, offering a breathtaking view unlike anything humanity has ever witnessed. The Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) are the two largest galaxies in our Local Group. Andromeda is currently about 2.5 million light-years from Earth. For many years, measurements from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope indicated that their mutual gravitational attraction would bring them together in a major encounter roughly 4 billion years in the future. 

🌠 What does “galaxy collision” actually mean?

A galactic collision is not like two solid objects crashing together. A galaxy is mostly empty space, and the distances between individual stars are enormous. Therefore, direct star-to-star collisions are expected to be extremely rare.

Instead, the enormous gravitational fields of the two galaxies will interact. Their spiral structures may be stretched and distorted, their stars may be placed into new orbits, and gas and dust clouds may be compressed. These processes can trigger periods of enhanced star formation.

Earlier simulations showed a possible merger into a large elliptical galaxy several billion years after the initial encounter. 

The Sun itself could be moved into a different region of the resulting galactic system, but NASA has stated that the Earth and Solar System would not necessarily be destroyed by the galactic collision itself. The future habitability of Earth, however, would depend on many other factors, including the long-term evolution of the Sun. 

⚠️ Important scientific update: the outcome is not certain

The most important correction to the popular version of this story is that the collision is no longer considered absolutely inevitable.

A 2025 analysis using more than a decade of NASA/ESA Hubble observations, together with data from the ESA Gaia mission, found that the future interaction is much more uncertain than previously thought. The study reported approximately a 50–50 chance of a Milky Way–Andromeda collision within the next 10 billion years, with the gravitational influence of the Large Magellanic Cloud affecting the Milky Way's trajectory. 

Therefore, the scientifically accurate statement today is:

🌌 What about “Milkomeda”?

“Milkomeda” is a popular informal nickname used for a possible future merged galaxy. It is not an official astronomical name. The final appearance and structure of any future merged system would depend on the actual orbital evolution of the Milky Way, Andromeda, the Large Magellanic Cloud, Triangulum Galaxy, and other gravitational influences.

So, the original text captures the dramatic cosmic scale of galactic evolution, but its statements about an inevitable collision in exactly 4 billion years and a guaranteed final merger should be updated in light of the latest NASA/ESA-supported research. 

**In simple terms: galaxies do not merely “crash”—they dance under gravity, reshape one another over billions of years, and may ultimately become one cosmic system.**
