Tribute to Pingali Venkaiah on His Birth Anniversary
Honouring the Architect of India’s National Identity
Today, we solemnly remember and pay heartfelt homage to Pingali Venkaiah, the visionary who gifted India its most sacred symbol of unity and sovereignty—the National Flag, the Tiranga.
Born into a humble farmer's family in the heartland of Andhra Pradesh, Pingali Venkaiah was much more than a flag designer. He was a freedom fighter, Gandhian, educationist, geologist, linguist, and above all, a relentless patriot. At a time when India was in the throes of its struggle for freedom, it was his deep sense of national pride and visionary spirit that led him to conceive a flag that would inspire millions to rally behind the cause of independence.
In 1921, during the Indian National Congress session held in Bezwada (now Vijayawada), Venkaiah presented his design to Mahatma Gandhi, envisioning a unifying emblem for the nation. This design later evolved into the Tiranga, the tricolour that continues to flutter in glory across the length and breadth of the country.
Each colour—saffron for courage and sacrifice, white for truth and peace, and green for faith and chivalry—along with the Ashoka Chakra, symbolizes the essence of India’s civilizational ethos and her undying spirit of progress and righteousness.
Yet, it remains one of history's ironies that this selfless patriot died in obscurity and poverty in 1963, with his immense contribution receiving little recognition during his lifetime. As a nation that now stands tall among the global community, we owe it to him to restore his rightful place in the annals of Indian history.
Let this day not merely be a remembrance but a renewed commitment to the ideals represented by our national flag. Let us honour Pingali Venkaiah not just in words, but by upholding the values he wove into the very fabric of the Tiranga.
