India has officially launched its first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train, marking a significant milestone in clean rail transportation. The train was flagged off on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana as part of Indian Railways' green mobility initiative.
What makes it special?
🚆 One of the world's longest and most powerful hydrogen trainsets, featuring 10 coaches.
⚡ Powered by a 1,200 kW hydrogen fuel-cell system, making it among the highest-powered hydrogen passenger trains globally.
🌱 Produces only water vapour as a direct emission, helping reduce dependence on diesel on non-electrified routes.
👥 Designed to carry around 2,500–2,600 passengers at speeds of up to 75 km/h.
🇮🇳 Positions India among a select group of countries operating hydrogen-powered passenger trains.
The project is expected to support India's broader green hydrogen mission and the goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, while demonstrating indigenous capabilities in sustainable railway technology.
