The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced that it will conduct a pilot run of open-book examinations for classes 9 to 12 in selected schools later in 2024. This new exam format is being introduced by CBSE as part of its continuous education reforms aimed at reducing exam stress and encouraging innovative learning methods.
In an open-book exam, students are allowed to refer to their textbooks, notes and other approved reference material while answering the exam questions. They are tested on their conceptual understanding of the subject matter and ability to apply their knowledge, rather than memorizing and reproducing content.
The key features of the open-book exam pilot are:
- Exams will be held in selected CBSE-affiliated schools across India. The board will announce the list of participating schools soon.
- Question papers will assess students on higher cognitive skills - analysis, critical thinking, conceptual clarity. Questions directly from textbooks will be avoided.
- Students can refer to any materials approved by CBSE during exam. This may include textbooks, notes, resource books etc.
- Answer sheets will be designed to test students' original understanding instead of direct copying from sources.
- Evaluation will focus on students' understanding of concepts, and ability to apply knowledge creatively. Memorization of facts will not get high marks.
- CBSE will issue detailed guidelines to participating schools regarding exam conduct, invigilation, approved reference materials etc.
- Feedback will be collected from students, teachers and schools post-exam about the experience and effectiveness.
The open-book exam pattern, if implemented properly, can revolutionize learning and assessment systems. It can make exams less stressful while testing higher-level skills. The pilot will help CBSE understand the challenges and practicalities of conducting such exams. The feedback will be used to refine the format before it is rolled out more widely.
