* **Shyama Prasad Mukherjee** (6 July 1901 – 23 June 1953) was an Indian politician, barrister and academician, who served as India's first Minister for Industry and Supply (currently known as Ministry of Commerce and Industry) in Jawaharlal Nehru's cabinet. After falling out with Nehru, protesting against the Liaquat-Nehru Pact, Mukherjee resigned from Nehru's cabinet. With the help of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the predecessor to the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951.
* Mukherjee was born in Calcutta, British India, into a Bengali Brahmin family. He was educated at Presidency College, Calcutta, and the Inns of Court, London. After returning to India, he practiced law in Calcutta and became involved in politics.
* Mukherjee was elected to the Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1930 and served as Minister for Education and Public Health in the Fazlul Huq government from 1937 to 1941. In 1943, he became the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha.
* In 1947, Mukherjee was appointed Minister for Industry and Supply in Nehru's cabinet. However, he resigned from the cabinet in 1950 in protest against the Nehru-Liaquat Pact, which he felt gave too much power to the Muslim League.
* In 1951, Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a political party that was committed to Hindu nationalism. The Jana Sangh became a major force in Indian politics, and Mukherjee was elected to the Lok Sabha in 1952.
* Mukherjee died in mysterious circumstances in 1953 while in detention in Kashmir. His death was a major blow to the Jana Sangh, and it took the party several years to recover.
Mukherjee was a controversial figure, but he was also a highly respected politician. He was a strong advocate for Hindu rights, and he was also a champion of economic development. He is remembered as one of the founding fathers of the Bharatiya Janata Party, and his legacy continues to inspire Indian nationalists today.
