Heartfelt wishes to our Muslim children on the occasion of the sacred month of Ramadan!
This month concludes with fasting, recitation of the Quran, prayers, and acts of service. I congratulate the Muslim community for their generosity through the Zakat system, which reflects humanity and aids those in need.
During this auspicious time, I pray to Allah for the strengthening of unity, peace, and truth in society, and that the poor and marginalized communities receive the development they deserve. May the Ramadan festival bring joy, health, and peace to all.
Ramadan Mubarak
The significance of Ramadan and its teachings – according to Islamic scriptures
Ramadan (رمضان) is considered the holiest month in Islam. Fasting (Sawm - صوم) during this month is one of the five fundamental principles of Islam. The importance of Ramadan is clearly described in the Quran and Hadiths.
1. Quranic verses about Ramadan
Al-Baqarah (2:185):
"Ramadan is the month in which the Quran was revealed, a guidance for mankind, with clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So, whoever sights the month, let him fast it."
This verse emphasizes the greatness of Ramadan, as it was the month the Quran was revealed. It not only provides spiritual purification but also serves as a guide for Muslims to live their lives in an orderly manner.
Al-Baqarah (2:183):
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous."
This verse makes it clear that fasting is not merely abstaining from food but is a key spiritual practice to purify the mind and soul.
2. Hadiths (Sayings of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him)
(Sahih al-Bukhari 38, Sahih Muslim 760):
"When the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of hell are closed, and the devils are chained."
This Hadith indicates that Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims to reduce their sins, perform good deeds, and seek Allah’s mercy.
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1901):
"Whoever fasts during Ramadan with faith and seeking reward from Allah, his past sins will be forgiven."
This Hadith underlines the spiritual significance of fasting, offering an opportunity for purification and forgiveness.
3. Key practices during Ramadan
Fasting (Sawm - صوم):
Abstaining from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. This is not just physical restraint but an opportunity to develop devotion, patience, and self-discipline.
Taraweeh Prayers:
Special nightly prayers during Ramadan, which are highly revered.
Recitation of the Quran:
Completing the recitation of the Quran (Khatm al-Quran) is considered a major act of merit.
Zakat (Charity):
Giving to the poor and marginalized, especially during Ramadan, brings immense spiritual rewards. The Quran (9:60) clearly emphasizes the importance of giving Zakat.
I'tikaf (Spiritual retreat in the mosque):
Spending the last ten days of Ramadan in the mosque, dedicating oneself to worship, is a practice followed by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
4. Laylat al-Qadr – The Night of Power
According to the Quran, during Ramadan, there is a night known as Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power).
Al-Qadr (97:3-5):
"Laylat al-Qadr is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit (Gabriel) descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."
Prayers, reflection, and Quran recitation during this night bring Allah’s blessings, as indicated in the Hadiths.
5. Eid ul-Fitr – The Festival at the end of Ramadan
Eid ul-Fitr is celebrated at the end of the fasting month. Special prayers are offered on this day, and Zakat al-Fitr (charity) is given to help those in need. It is also a day for families and friends to come together in joy.
In summary:
Ramadan is a sacred time for physical and spiritual purification through fasting, prayer, service, and reflection. According to the Quran and Hadiths, it is the holiest month for Muslims. It serves as a time to cleanse the mind, body, and soul.
