Sandeep Unnikrishnan was a 31-year-old Major in the Indian Army's elite Special Action Group (SAG) of the National Security Guard (NSG). On 26 November 2008, he was part of the team that was deployed to the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, which had been taken over by terrorists.
Unnikrishnan was one of the first commandos to enter the hotel, and he immediately began to rescue hostages. He single-handedly rescued 14 hostages, including a young girl who was hiding in a cupboard. He also killed two of the terrorists.
During the course of the operation, Unnikrishnan was shot in the arm. However, he refused to be evacuated and continued to fight the terrorists. He eventually cornered the remaining four terrorists in the hotel's ballroom, but he was killed in the ensuing gun battle.
Unnikrishnan's bravery and sacrifice saved countless lives. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award.

A biopic film titled "Major" was released in 2022, which is based on the life of Sandeep Unnikrishnan. The film was directed by Sashi Kiran Tikka and starred Adivi Sesh in the lead role.
