Sikkim Statehood Day is celebrated on May 16, to commemorate the formation of Sikkim as the 22nd state of India Union, in 1975.

Sikkim was a protectorate of India from 1950 to 1975. In 1975, the Prime Minister of Sikkim appealed to the Indian Parliament for Sikkim to become a state of India. In April of that year, the Indian Army took over the city of Gangtok and disarmed the Chogyal's palace guards. In a special referendum held in May 1975, more than 97 percent of the electorate voted for the merger of Sikkim with India. Sikkim became the 22nd state of India on May 16, 1975.
