Vevek choodamani from 1to 20


01 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
मनो बुद्ध्यहंकारचित्तानि नाहं,
न च श्रोत्रजिह्वे न च घ्राणनेत्रे।
न च व्योम भूमिर्न तेजो न वायुः,
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्॥

Translation:
I am not the mind, intellect, ego, or the chitta (consciousness),
Neither am I the ears, tongue, nose, or the eyes.
I am not the sky, earth, fire, air,
I am Shiva, the embodiment of pure consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva.

2 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्,
चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम् शिवोऽहम्।
अहं चिदानन्दबिम्ब आत्ममनस्त्वं,
त्वमेव चिदानन्दरूपः शिवोऽहम्॥

Translation:
I am Shiva, the embodiment of pure consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva,
I am Shiva, the embodiment of pure consciousness and bliss, I am Shiva.
I am the reflection of pure consciousness and bliss in the mirror of the mind,
You are also the embodiment of pure consciousness and bliss, you are Shiva.

3 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
त्वयि मयि चान्यत्रैकोऽपि न लभ्यः,
शरीरतृणं किञ्चिदान्यत्र लोके।
त्यक्त्वा देहं पुनरापि न जन्म,
मृत्योः शोक्यं त्यक्त्वा देहं पुनरापि॥

Translation:
Neither in you nor in me nor in anything else
Can the infinite be found, for It is beyond all forms.
Abandoning the identification with the body,
And realizing that you are not subject to birth or death,
Transcend the sorrow and abandon the identification with the body again.

4 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
जाग्रत्स्वप्नसुषुप्ताभ्यां चिदानन्दैकरूपता।
अवस्थात्रयभेदेन जगत्कारणमुच्यते॥

Translation:
The world is identified as the cause
By the distinction of the three states: waking, dream, and deep sleep,
But in reality, it is of the nature of pure consciousness and bliss alone.

5 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
वासनाक्षयकर्तारं पूर्वेभ्यः कर्मभिः शुभैः।
जीवन्मुक्तिः स वै ब्रह्मणि स्थितोऽभिव्यञ्जकः॥

Translation:
The one who destroys the tendencies (vasanas) through auspicious actions performed in previous lives,
That person, established in Brahman (the Absolute Reality), manifests liberation while living (Jivanmukti).

6 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
बालस्तावत्क्रीडासक्तः तरुणस्तावत्तरुणीसक्तः।
वृद्धस्तावच्चिन्तासक्तः परमे ब्रह्मणि कोऽपि न सक्तः॥

Translation:
In childhood, one is attached to play,
In youth, one is attached to one's romantic partner,
In old age, one is attached to worries and anxieties,
But rarely is anyone attached to the Supreme Brahman.

7 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
जन्तूनां नरजन्म दुर्लभं ततो पुंस्त्वं ततो विप्रतिषिद्धम्।
ततः श्रुतिर्मृगया। प्रेत्य भूमः ततः कृष्णः स्मर ततः पुनर्नरः॥

Translation:
The birth as a human being is rare among all living creatures,
After that, being a man is rare among humans,
Then, having a desire for liberation is rare among men,
And finally, rarest of all is to have heard of the Self-realization and pursued it.

8 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
बाल्ये विद्यार्थी पुत्रः प्रौढे दारिद्र्यनाशकः।
वार्धक्ये तु विपत्तिः स्याद्भग्ने ब्रह्मणि राधितः॥

Translation:
In childhood, one seeks knowledge,
In youth, one pursues material wealth,
In old age, one faces difficulties,
But rarely does one seek the Supreme Brahman.

9 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
स्वप्ने यथा पुराणं तु विज्ञानं बोध एव च।
अवाभासत एवास्मिन् न तथा जाग्रदात्मनि॥

Translation:
Just as in a dream, the experience of the past appears real and the knowledge gained seems true,
Similarly, in the waking state, the world appears real, but in the awakened Self, it is not so.

10 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
यः श्वानं वा मृगं वा वा सर्पमभ्रं वा पिण्डमदः।
सर्वं वस्तु विवेकेन तत्त्वमस्तु निरूपितम्॥

Translation:
Whether it be a dog, an animal, a serpent, or a lump of clay,
By discrimination, everything is determined to be the same Supreme Reality.

11 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
जातेऽष्टमीं घृणानां जाते प्रिये संभाषणे।
प्रिये न जायते चैव जाते शोको विपत्तिशः॥

Translation:
With the birth of hatred, on the eighth day arises
The tendency to speak about what is disliked.
With the birth of attachment, there is no arising of what is liked,
And with the birth of both, arise sorrow and calamity.

12 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
स्वविषयं त्यजेद्भूमौ स्वप्रकारेण वा वने।
न युञ्जीयात्प्रवृत्तिं तु यदि विज्ञाय पुरस्कृतम्॥

Translation:
In the presence of one's own objects, whether in a house or in the forest,
One should neither indulge in engaging with them,
Nor reject them if one recognizes them as fleeting and insignificant.

13 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
श्रौते नास्तिको वेदे वा प्रमाणं नास्तिकोऽग्रणीः।
मुमुक्षुर्नास्तिको मुक्तो यत्र किञ्चित्प्रमाणतः॥

Translation:
In matters of scripture, the atheist denies its authority,
In matters of logic, the ignorant ignore its significance,
In matters of liberation, the one seeking liberation is liberated,
For in any context, there is always some form of evidence.

14 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
वेदो नित्यमधीयतां तदुदितं कर्म स्वनुष्ठीयताम्।
तेनेष्टं फलं संयत्तं तत्क्षणाल्लभ्यते निश्चितम्॥

Translation:
Let the Vedas be constantly studied,
Let the prescribed actions be performed,
By such disciplined effort, the desired result,
Without a doubt, will be attained at the right time.

15 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
तत्त्वज्ञानात्मनामेव विदित्वा विज्ञाय चेश्वरम्।
निष्प्रपञ्चं ब्रह्ममयं स्वयमात्मानमव्ययम्॥

Translation:
Knowing oneself as the essence of true knowledge,
And realizing the Supreme Lord,
One perceives the non-dual, eternal, and Brahman-filled reality,
The imperishable Self within oneself.

16 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
ब्रह्मणि विद्यां समुदास्थित्य जीवेत्परिपूर्णचिन्मात्रभावन्।
तत्कारणं स्मरेद्यस्तु स जीवी जगत्कृद्भूतलोचनः॥

Translation:
Established in the knowledge of Brahman,
The individual lives perceiving oneself as the all-encompassing pure consciousness.
Remembering that as the cause, one is the experiencer,
That individual becomes the seer of the world and its creator

17.verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
वाचारम्भणं विकारो नामधेयं मृत्तिकेत्येव सत्यम्।
अविद्यामोहितं विश्वं मायामुपह्वयत्येष एव हि॥

Translation:
The modification of speech is but a name, which is essentially clay.
Likewise, the entire world, deluded by ignorance,
Is nothing but an appearance of Maya, the illusory power.

18 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
ब्रह्मात्मकत्वं सच्चिदानन्दस्वरूपं
स्वात्मारमं सान्द्रलयं सदाशिवं च।
प्राप्नोति यस्तु परिभाषाविमृश्यमाणं
सोऽहं न तं तत्त्वमजानामि तत्त्ववित्॥

Translation:
The one who, through an analysis of definitions,
Discovers the nature of Brahman as the Self,
Existence-Knowledge-Bliss Absolute,
The eternal abode and the Supreme Lord,
That person, as a knower of truth,
"I am not that, the Absolute Reality,"
Realizes the truth of one's own essence.

19 verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
योगास्त्रयं त्रिधा प्रोक्तं निष्कलङ्कं निरञ्जनं।
चिन्मात्रं सर्वदृश्याध्यं सर्वदृग्विलयं परम्॥

Translation:
Yoga is said to be of three types:
Immaculate, without blemish, and without stain,
Consisting of pure consciousness, beyond all objects of perception,
And the ultimate state of merging the seer with the seen.

20th verse of Vivekachudamani in Sanskrit along with an English translation:

Sanskrit:
सर्वे वेदाः यत्पदार्था यस्मिन्नवगमंयते।
तत्त्वमात्रं परं ब्रह्म तस्मादेवं विमुच्यते॥

Translation:
All the Vedas lead to the understanding of that reality,
In which all the essence of words is comprehended.
That ultimate reality is the Absolute Brahman,
By realizing which, one becomes liberated.
